While Purim is regarded as one of the most joyous Jewish holidays, it carries with it some important messages.
As we read the scroll of Ester, a book of the bible, we learn of Mordecai & Queen Esther who save the Jewish people of Persia from the evil intensions of Haman. Haman was an advisor to the King and pointed to the Jewish people as being “different” than all other citizens. Having been offended by Mordecai, he sought to annihilate the Jews of Persia. After Esther goes to the King and reveals her own Jewish identity, the evil decree is averted and the Jewish people are saved.
The story sets forth a number of compelling themes. Haman might very well be considered the first anti-semite in history, as he refers to the Jews as “different”. For us, throughout history, Haman has symbolized those who would act upon the bigotry and hatred of “the other”. So does Purim remind us of our ongoing struggle against all of the “Hamens” who would perpetrate evil and cruelty upon the Jews and any people.
Purim conveys that light and goodness will prevail in our world.
