Disney’s Newsies, a 1992 musical film turned Broadway show is a true story of the historic Newsboys Strike of 1899 in New York City. I love coming to Westchester Broadway Theater on a regular basis and was especially looking forward to coming to see Newsies.
With poor living conditions, horrible child labor and terrible political and corporate corruption, children who should be at school and well cared for by their parents were forced to work and face cruelty, hunger and poverty. The themes of poor vs. the wealthy, brotherhood, chasing the dream and always having courage and strength even in the most difficult times are clearly reflected in the show. In addition, I thought that Newsies was very much a David vs. Goliath story where at the end, the underdog (in this case John Kelly and his team) reached fair wages, happiness and the ultimate dream.
Jack Kelly’s character played by Daniel Scott Walton proved that brotherhood is like family, always there for one another no matter what. Going to Santa Fe with his best friend, Crutchie (Patrick Tombs) where there is “open space”, “fresh air” and true happiness is the ultimate dream. However, at the end, conquering the battle for fair wages, having all your brothers and sisters in NYC unite and finding love in the most unintentional way with Mary Beth Donahoe (as Katherine Plummer) was even better than hopping on the train to Santa Fe.
Newsies brought an abundance of emotions and personalities into one amazing show: sorrow and happiness, laughter and tears, love and hate, dominance and weakness. I felt that each cast member brought their character to life and truly showed the audience what it was like to be a paper boy in 1899.
From an impressive range of beautiful vocals to outstanding choreography and dancing, Newsies was the best show I have seen in a long time!
